The 101 on hair porosity

If you’re grappling with what exactly hair porosity is, don’t worry. You’re not the only one. I just recently discovered what hair porosity is myself and what the porosity of my hair is. Knowing your hair’s porosity will help you make better product purchasing decisions, adapt your regimen accordingly and all around have a better understanding of how porosity and natural hair works.

So, what exactly is hair porosity?
It’s your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, e.g. water. Hair porosity is genetic but it can change due to excessive heat treatments and/or other chemical processes that are done on your hair. Knowing my hair’s porosity made it a lot more easier to shop for (new) products and it gave me a little bit more insight on my hair.

How do you determine your hair’s porosity?
Your hair can be low, medium or high porosity and it is very easy to find out what it is. You will need a glass/bowl of water and drop some of your hair strands in there. Wait a few minutes to see the results. If your hair strands keep floating, your hair is low porosity and if it sinks all the way down, it is high porosity. Somewhere in the middle, your hair is medium porosity.

Low porosity
If your hair is low porosity, it means that it does not absorb moisture easily. Low porosity hair is for the most part considered healthy because the hair cuticles lay flat. The best products for low porosity hair should be water based, e.g. leave in conditioners rather than butters/creams. Also, moisturizing deep conditioners are more effective than protein deep conditioners.

Medium porosity
The hair cuticle of medium porosity hair is slightly opened, which makes it easier to take care of than low porosity hair. It absorbs moisture faster but also retains it. Moisturizing deep conditioners are the best for medium porosity but once in a while it can benefit from a protein deep conditioner.

High porosity
High porosity, is most of the time, considered as damaged hair but as said before, hair porosity is genetic, so it can also be inherent. The hair cuticles are completely open, moisture comes in very easy but also leaves the hair very fast, making the hair frizzy and dry looking. Leave-in conditioners are best to bring moisture in the hair and sealing with a butter or cream to keep that moisture in. Protein deep conditioners can make the hair less porous but not too much because it does not replace the moisture that the hair needs, it only repairs the damaged parts in the cuticles temporarily.

By determining my hair’s porosity, it suddenly became clear to me why almost all the new butter and creams I try do not work for my hair, since my hair is low porosity. There are a few that don’t weigh my hair down and give me good moisture but I mainly use leave in conditioners. Stay tuned for more tips on taking for low porosity hair!

Favorite Super Foods of August

As you may have noticed, I am a real health freak. I keep emphasizing how important it is to have a healthy lifestyle. In America, I was incredibly unhealthy. A friend of mine told me that students during their fresh men year gain lots of weight, because of the availability of junk food. Moreover, since they (often) do not longer live with their parents they easily eat junk food.  However, there are lots of freshmen students who go to the gym, eat healthy and avoid junk food.

When I came back in the Netherlands, my mother was in shock because of how much weight I have gained.  According to myself, I did not gain that much weight. To give you an idea:

Before America                     In the United States                                Back in the Netherlands after some

I achieved weight loss mainly because of eating super foods, fruits and vegetables. I avoid eating too much carbohydrates and candy. I have to admit that I cannot resist chocolate which is not necessary a bad thing. Dark chocolate is the healthiest type of chocolate. Eating chocolate improves your mood. Moreover, dark chocolate consists of antioxidants. See? Women have good reasons to love chocolate! Nevertheless, this does not mean that you have to eat one whole bar (huge package) within one day…I know, it is so hard to resist.

This article is about the super foods I have bought during the first few weeks of August. I could not help myself, after doing sports I went to the health store and bought some super foods.

1. White mulberries
2. Pollen Grains
3. Flax seeds

White mulberries

So let’s start with white mulberries first. These are probably the most delicious super foods I have eaten until now. It tastes just like honey and it is also very healthy. But why? Let me tell you!
It consist of vitamin B, vitamin C and vitamin K. The advantages of these healthy ‘snacks’ are:

– It strenghtens your kidneys
– It lowers your cholesterol
– It improves your digestion
– It consists of resveratrol which is a type of antioxidant

Pollen grains

These are probably the most disgusting super food I have ever eaten. Yet, I will continue eating them. Because it was pretty expensive and it is very healthy. Luckily, one teaspoon pollen grains is enough for one day. Pollen grains are collected by bees who need them in order to survive. These little insects take take the pollen grains to their colony in order to feed the little ones.  Not only are pollen grains healthy for bees, it is very healthy for human too! The main advantages are:

– If you do lots of sports, this super food will give you lots of energy!
– Decreases intestinal discomfort which means that it stops diarrhea and digestion.
– Do you have a very busy schedule? Which makes you forget to eat enough vegetables and fruits? No problem two teaspoons of pollen grains a day helps you to consume a part of the necessary vitamins.
– Helps against acne, asthma, bronchitis and amnesia.

Flax seeds

I am eating flax seeds since more than two years. A year ago I tried to make a leave conditioner out of it, which actually worked pretty well. I will keep you posted regarding this. Flax seeds consist of fiber, antioxidants and healthy fat. But what are the advantages? Let’s clarify:

— Reduces the risks of cancer, diabetes and heart diseases
— It helps against digestion
— It improves your blood sugar
— It prevents against radiation

Green smoothie of the week: Back to basics

I know I should write about green smoothies on a weekly basis, but the last couple of weeks have been crazy. I had to get used to my job and during the weekends, I was so exhausted!

One of the main reasons I love green smoothies is because it brings my hair alive. After returning from the United States, my hair was extremely dry due to the weather circumstances and the tap water. I immediately started drinking green smoothies and guess what? My hair is much much healthier. See the two pictures below. The picture on the left is made a few days after my return, the picture on the right was made five weeks after my return. Thus, your lifestyle really influences your hair.

Out of all the green smoothies I have made, I have to admit that the basic one is the one I like the most. I add super foods to my shakes in order to give it that little extra. In an upcoming post I will go in further detail about it.

The ingredients of this delicious smoothie:

-One banana

-One handful of spinach

-Soy milk

-One table spoon of Wheat-grass (optional)

– Soy protein (optional)

Basic2One banana a day makes your curly hair stay OK!

In my previous green smoothie post I mentioned the advantages of consuming banana’s and Weath-grass. Did you miss that post? No biggie, just click here!

Whoever watched Popeye in the past, knows that spinach is very good for you. Unlike Popeye, you will not get a super muscular body immediately. However, eating spinach is extremely good when you want to have a healthy lifestyle. This delicious vegetable consists of vitamin A, B2, B3, B6, C, E and K. Besides, it consists of a high percentage of minerals. Not to forget, spinach helps to prevent several types of cancer.

When you want to make your smoothie, you can choose for water rather than regular milk. I prefer soy milk not only because of the taste, but also because it barely consists of carbohydrates. The reason why I am trying to lessen the amount of carbohydrates I consume is because these fellas are the reason why we gain weight, even though we are having a healthy lifestyle. Nevertheless, if you are trying to gain weight it is no problem to combine protein with regular milk.

Firstly, wash the blender and poor the soy milk (or water) in the blender. Make sure that the amount of milk is in balance with the spinach and banana, otherwise it might be too watery.
Thereafter, you can add the table spoon of the Weath-grass powder. This step is optional, lots of people do not like the taste of  weath-grass. Nevertheless, the taste of banana is much stronger and therefore you will not really taste the weath-grass powder. Also, you can add protein powder after your work out.

Peel the banana and slice it in pieces. Add it in the blender and start blending. Make sure that there are no chunks in your smoothie, this is yukkie!

Poor your smoothie in a nice glass and enjoy!

Green smoothie of the week: Apple-Banana

Do you love green smoothies as much as I do? Then you should try this out! But first, do you know why green smoothies are becoming more and more popular? These smoothies do not only boost your energy, it also helps you to lose weight and it also makes your life style healthier. You will not longer forget to eat your veggies and fruits!

Ingredients of this smoothie:

– One banana

– One green apple

– Spinach

– Lettuce

– Milk (I used soy

– Wheat grass
powder (optional)

– Protein powder
(only after doing sports)

Banana’s boost your energy and it stimulates the ‘collaboration’ between your muscles and nerves. It decreases anxiety and depression. Moreover, it improves your mood during PMS. The reason I add banana to my green smoothies is in order to diminish the chances to get another stomach ulcer. Not to forget, it facilitates the absorption of nutrients by the body. Wheatgrass powder consists of 80% – 90% of vitamins you need each day. I prefer to use soy milk rather than regular milk, because ever since I had been in America I like the taste of soy milk more. After the gym, I drink a green smoothie with protein powder in order to help my muscles recover. I add three table spoons which should be enough.

In the Netherlands you can buy wheatgrass powder at De tuinen (€17,99)
In America you can buy wheatgrass powder at Costco Wholesale ( two pack $49,99)

First, you cut the apple in small pieces and put them in the blender. Add water and then blend it. Afterwards, you need to grab a drainer and poor the juice through the drainer in a cup.

Wash the blender and poor the cup of freshly made apple juice in the blender. Add soy milk and a table spoon of wheatgrass powder. Then, you add the lettuce, spinach and the banana. Start blending.

After everything is perfectly blended (You do not see any pieces of vegetables) the green smoothie is ready to be served. Poor it in a cup, grab a magazine and enjoy!
