DIY: Lighten your hair

Hi guys!

This article is especially for women with dark hair who would like to lighten their hair without having to color it with ammoniak.

Since I still have Henna in my hair, I am not able to color my hair, so during the summer I tried some alternative methods. I came up with a DIY recipe to lighten my hair which you can also use!

Heatless curls: Long and narrow curls by Curlformers

Hi guys!

So anybody who knows me, knows I love my Curlformers set. I doubted a while to purchase them but I’m glad I did. Sure they are expensive, but I think it was worth the price, since I use them a lot and always love my results. I have the styling kit long spiral curls for extra long hair up to 55 cm (22″). But I love to try new things and when my cousin purchased long corkscrew curls I was curious and again in doubt to buy that pack as well. I decided to try it first and we swapped for a week.

The long corkscrew curls also comes in a styling kit. I borrowed the kit for extra long hair up to 55 cm (22″). Again, this package also comes with 40 curlformers and two hooks.

As usual, I washed and deep conditioned my hair before applying my styling products. I apply a leave in conditioner and a thick cream on my hair. I installed the curlformers on damp hair, rather than soaking wet.

First, I inserted the hook in the curlformer and take a small section of hair. I applied some gel to the section of hair and secure the hook with the opening facing up onto the section of hair. I slide the curlformer a bit over the hair and gently pull the hook at the end. The curlformer bounces up on its own after taking the hook out.

I always sleep on my curlformers but this time, it was my day off and I decided to walk around with them and let them air dry.

And these are the results:

I liked the way it looked but for several reasons I’m glad I tried them out first because I will not be purchasing these. I will have a video coming up in which I will explain why I am not purchasing this styling kit and why I prefer the styling kit for long spiral curls. Stay tuned!

Online shopping for natural hair products

A while back, I shared a post on CurlsUnderstood about 5 websites to purchase natural hair products. I’ve now made a list with only Dutch websites, since it can be hard for us naturals in Holland to find some products/brands.

1. My Natural Curls. (www.mynaturalcurls.com)

My Natural Curls has brands like Shea Moisture, Jessicurl and Curls and a few others. They deliver very fast in the Netherlands but it may take a few days for other European Countries. Also, shipping is free above €60 in the Netherlands. You can pay with iDeal, Creditcard and Paypal.

2. Natural Black Hair (www.naturalblackhair.nl)

My natural black hair has brands like Curlformers, Shea Moisture, Aubrey Organics and more. When you order before 4 PM, it will be delivered the next day (in Holland). Also, shipping is free when you spend more than €60. You can pay with iDeal and Paypal.

3. Curls of Nature (www.curlsofnature.com)

Curls of Nature was one of the first websites I started purchasing Shea Moisture’s products. They also offer products of Jessicurl and Kinky Curly. If you order before 5 PM, it will be delivered the next day (in Holland).

4. Pakshop (www.pakshop.nl)

I recently discovered Pakshop and I love it. They offer various drugstore brands, but also salon brands. They have stores in Arnhem and Nijmegen, but of course it is also possible to have the products delivered on your doorstep. Shipping is fast and free if you spend over €50.

5. Me Gorgeous (www.megorgeous.nl)

Again, I recently discovered this website because of a nice tip from a subscriber. They have several stores within the Netherlands, but you can also order online. Shipping is within a couple of days and free when you spend above €50.

I’m sure they’re a lot more great websites/stores to buy natural hair products (in the Netherlands), where do you buy yours?

Product favorites of 2014

Hi guys!

I wanted to share with you my favorite (curly) hair products I used in 2014 and will continue using in 2015. I know I’m already a month behind but better late than never right!

Shampoo’s/Co-wash

Agadir Sulfate Free shampoo
Creme of Nature Argan Oil Sulfate Free Moisture & Shine shampoo
Shea Moisture Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser

I always use sulfate free shampoo’s and in 2014 I started co washing my hair in between shampoo washes. This worked especially great with me in the summer when my hair needed more moisture. The two shampoos I mentioned cleanse my hair without making it dry and give me great shine. I would definitely recommend them.

Conditioners/Deep Conditioners

Tresemmé Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner
Yes to Carrots Pampering Conditioner
Creme of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning Treatment
Creme of Nature Straight from Eden Conditioning Treatment

I have thick curly hair and I need very thick and creamy (deep) conditioners. These conditioners never let me down, and leave my hair feeling very soft and moisturized.

Leave in-Conditioners

Shea Moisture Curl and Style Milk
Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave in Conditioner
Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Leave in Treatment
Ouidad Leave in Conditioner
Lottabody Curl and Style Milk

I actually started using the Lottabody Curl and Style Milk in 2015 but I liked it so much, I had to include it in this list. However, my most favorite is the Eden BodyWorks Coconut Shea Leave in Conditioner. This conditioner has a lot of water in it, and that is what my hair needs and loves. I can’t wait to try other product lines of them.

Oils/Sealers

Coconut Oil
Almond Oil
Jojoba Rosemary Mint Oil by TwoCurlsOneMission

Coconut Oil will always be my number one favorite. This oil is great to deep condition with but also helps me retain length by applying it on my ends four times a week. However, when I run out of Coconut Oil, I will substitute it for Almond Oil, which gives me great results as well. A new product I used in 2014 was the Jojoba Rosemary Mint Oil by TwoCurlsOneMission. This oil is amazing, I mainly use it as a pre poo or to refresh my curls and protective styles.

I like to try new products a lot so I’ve tried many more in 2014 than this, but the list above were my favorites and I still use all of the products mentioned above.

I can honestly recommend each of them to you to try and see how you like it. I purchased them on:
